When we decided to move to Northwest Crete we did not know where to start. We began by sending out a series of emails to six building companies that we had seen advertised in the magazines. We asked them lots of identical questions about the buying and building processes in Crete. Then we set about systematically eliminating them based on the quality of their replies. Only one person, Helen of Landmark Crete, gave us honest, full and detailed answers to all our questions. This gave us the confidence to come over to NW Crete to meet her and see what we could get for our money. Although we made it quite clear to her before we came that we were only “coming to look around and would definitely not be buying”, this did not stop her giving us her undivided attention for two full days as she took us around to see over 10 different plots.

Before we came over to see Helen she had taken the time to understand exactly what we would be looking for. Consequently, much to our surprise as we had only come over to look, we ended up buying the last plot she showed us. This plot had everything we wanted. Actually it exceeded our expectations and as we couldn’t risk losing our perfect plot we just had to buy it.

From then on Helen became our trusted agent. She has been with us every step of the way and we do not regret one second of our involvement with her. We now have a villa of good quality, completed more or less on time with only the normal ‘minor’ snags to be sorted out, and on a plot that has everything we wanted. We have, thanks to Helen, our dream property on Crete.

Helen has been living in NW Crete for many years and is married to a local person. She speaks fluent Greek which is an absolute necessity when dealing with all the Greek ‘red tape’ and beaurocracy surrounding any building-related activity in Greece. She has been involved with the Cretan building industry for many years and has built up a large portfolio of useful (and necessary) contacts that she knows from her own experiences are reliable, such as architects, lawyers, accountants, building companies, suppliers, etc.

There are so many bad stories out there about other builds that have gone wrong, or are even illegal, that choosing the right agent at the start is so important if very expensive mistakes are not to be made.

Throughout our building process Helen has:
  • Driven us around the area to find us the right plot,
  • Found us a reputable Greek-speaking builder,
  • Found us a reputable English-speaking architect, accountant and lawyer,
  • Helped us to draw up and finalise the Building Contract with our Greek builder,
  • Visited the site every week or so and sent us back photographs so we always knew what was happening,
  • Battled on our behalf with the builder to make them redo some things we were not totally happy with,
  • Came with us and did everything on our behalf to get our water and electricity supplies connected.

With Helen you can have confidence that things will be done right and that she will be there whenever you need her. The other thing about Helen is that you do not just get an agent when you engage Landmark Crete, you also get a person that you are happy to call a friend because you have no reason not to.

We have just returned from Crete on what was going to be a fact finding, and meeting property agents trip. Like so many people we had spent hours researching our move to Crete and we were aware of the need to find a good and reliable people to deal with. As luck would have it we had arranged to meet Landmark Crete, to view a renovation property. It was very clear, early on, that she had a good network of contacts in the building and real estate market, spoke fluent Greek and most importantly, understood our fear of getting it all wrong. Having discussed our needs with her she was able to introduce us to a builder she had confidence in and had known for many years. I might add that we would never have found this builder had we searched on our own. She was also able to recommend and set up a meeting with a Lawyer in Chania. Obviously, one can get suspicious when being introduced through third parties, particularly when large sums of money are involved, however we were always given choices and no pressure was placed on us to commit to anyone. In the end it made sense to engage Landmark Crete as our agent/consultant and take her advice and help, it certainly manages the risks from our point of view having someone "on the ground" taking care of our interests. We have now bought a plot of land on which we will have a house built in the near future. Landmark Crete, as our agent/consultant, will be on hand to assist us through the whole process even down to purchasing the furnishing and white goods etc. Highly recommended.
